Javier Aguirre: “We did what we could, but it was not enough”
The boss reflected on our defeat to Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey
Javier Aguirre spoke to the media after our 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey as we crashed out in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Robert Navarro’s early strike proved to be the difference on the night in a tightly-contested fixture. Find out what the boss had to say below:
On the match
"We gave away the first half, I don't know if we gave away 45 minutes, but half an hour we did. We were asleep; too cautious; without intensity; disjointed and against a rival like Real it's normal for them to beat you. That’s football and that's it. We have to turn the page. We understand that they are up there and a favourite for a Champions League spot, that they are going to fight for the Copa del Rey, that they are excellently trained and that they were playing at home. We knew it was going to be difficult.”
On the rotations
"We made eight changes in relation to the Osasuna match. I want to say that there are 18-19 players who can compete as they have showed and I am happy. In the end, we leave with a bittersweet taste of having been eliminated. We put in what we had, but it wasn't enough.”
On the next league match
"Celta Vigo is right there with us. They belong to our league. It's one of those we have to win at home. We have to play better and think about the three points and make up for the defeat away from Pamplona and get into the league dynamic again.”
