Alex Alegría kickstarts our Copa Del Rey campaign with a late 1-0 win at CD El Alamo
Alex Alegría assures our passage through to the next round with a late strike at Estadio Facundo Rivas
Alex Alegría scored a dramatic winner in added time to kickstart our Copa Del Rey campaign with a 1-0 victory at CD El Alamo.
Having hinted at a potential rotation to his side in his pre-match press conference, Vicente Moreno handed first starts of the season to Aleksandar Trajkovski, Pablo Chavarría, Abdon Prats, Jose Señe and Aridai Cabrera. Elsewhere, Baba Rahman made a long-awaited return from injury with his first appearance in three months.
The opening exchanges were characterised by a domination of possession dulled with little clarity in the final third as the hosts invited pressure upon themselves and hoped to hit us on the counter.
Although CD El Alamo’s gameplan forfeit control of the game, it did however herald the evening’s first opportunity in the 26th minute as Helmer Galeano forced Fabricio into a smart stop.
We would be indebted to the goalkeeper again prior to the break as the 31-year-old reacted fastest to Roberto Barriga breaking in behind and forced the striker into firing his effort over the bar.
The healthy contingent of travelling fans who made the trip to the capital had to wait until after the break for our first chance on goal, but Trajkovski was unable to get his shot on target despite finding space in the area.
We continued to test the resilient hosts as they began to tire, notably resulting in a wide effort from Chavarria before the forward then had a strike ruled out for offside.
CD El Alamo gave us a late scare hitting the post with four minutes to go, but substitute Alex Alegría converted Chavarria’s cross in added time to book our place in the next round of the competition.
