Julian Alvarez’s goal in the second half separates the two sides
Julian Alvarez’s 61st minute strike saw us fall to a 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid at Son Moix.
Jagoba Arrasate returned Martin Valjent to the starting XI while Johan Mojica and Sergi Darder also took position on the left flank.
Samu Costa had our first effort on goal in the 11th minute when his long-range free-kick curled towards the bottom corner, but was well saved by Jan Oblak.
Chances were few and far between as neither side were able to get a clear sight at goal.
We would have the first half’s best chance in the 42nd minute when Cyle Larin rose highest and forced Oblak to acrobatically tip the ball over the bar.
Sergi Darder would test Oblak again after the restart, although his low, whipped free-kick was comfortably saved.
Atletico Madrid would immediately break and Giulano Simeone’s hard work saw him get hold of a long ball forward, draw Dominik Grief off his line and tee up Alvarez to poke home into an empty net.
Grief would have to be at his best in the 65th minute to get down low and deny Riquelme who was through on goal.
Muriqi would have our best chance to equalise in the 68th minute when he headed just inches wide of the far post at a corner.
Substitute Abdon was thwarted by Oblak when he attempted to the lift the ball over him in the 85th minute.
We were unable to find an equaliser in the final stages of the game as we head into the international break.
