Luis García Plaza: ‘We’re not concerned about being league leader, the important thing is to be at the top’

The boss spoke to journalists at his pre-match press conference ahead of our clash with FC Cartagena

Luis García Plaza has shared his thoughts on the title race ahead of our trip to FC Cartagena on Wednesday evening.

We travel to Municipal Stadium Cartagonova having extended our unbeaten run to 12 games with a goalless draw against Sporting Gijón on the previous matchday, although the boss believes maintaining our good form will be the key over the course of a hectic schedule which will see us play four fixtures in the space of two weeks.

"Consistency is paramount among the teams at the top,” he told journalist at his pre-match press conference. “We're so used to doing things well that a bad first half surprises us. If we win at FC Cartagena, we'll be going to bed as leaders but that doesn't bother us. In the Segunda División, it doesn't matter if we finish first or second, what is important is direct promotion.

“More than physical fatigue when there are several games is a mental tiredness. We have worked on that aspect so the players recovery mentally and come back switched on. It’s a very important game to get points from. This is going to be a marathon and we are only at the 13th kilometre.”

Despite having lost their previous three consecutive outings, García says FC Cartagena still pose a threat and should not be underestimated.

“I think FC Cartagena should have more points than they’ve got and they will be awaiting us with plenty of motivation to try and beat us," he continued. "The key is to maintain our line of work, remain humble and value the team that they have. They have goalscorers like Rubén Castro who is like Rafa Nadal and continues to win Roland Garros at 40-years-of-age.”
