We are staying up!
We beat the drop on the final day of the season with a 2-0 win against CA Osasuna thanks to goals from Ángel and Clement Grenier clinching a dramatic victory.
Our fate was in our own hands and did not depend on other results heading into the fixture, although anything less than a win would spell the end of our La Liga adventure if Cadiz were able to secure all three points against Alavés.
The opening exchanges yielded few opportunities for either side as we looked to assert control of the game and remain defensively sound.
We came closest finding an opener in the 37th minute when Salva Sevilla’s whipped free-kick forced Sergio Herrera into a fine reaction save to tip over the bar.
Ante Budimir came close to giving the hosts the lead four minutes from the break, although our former striker dragged his effort wide of the post from the near post.
Manolo Reina had to be quick off his line to deny the Croatian in injury time, spreading himself well to tip away the forward’s attempt on goal from inside the box as we headed into the break level.
Javier Aguirre’s half-time team talk clearly worked as just two minutes after the restart Ángel combined with Vedat Muriqi to get in behind and find the bottom corner.
Herrera was later forced into a smart stop in the 71st minute when Dani Rodríguez’s curling effort was pushed wide.
We put the game beyond doubt and secured our place in the league when Clement Grenier reacted first to a loose ball from Abdòn’s initial header to fire home in the 83rd minute and cue wild celebrations among the travelling support.
