Match report RCD Mallorca 0 Reus Esportiu 1

RCD Mallorca have lost one to nil to Reus Deportiu in a game where Vázquez men were unable to break through an ordered defence from the visitors, who got more than they bargained for when they scored a goal from their only shot on target in the 89th minute, just before the final whistle.

The match started with the Reds wanting to control the ball, pushing forward. The local side were well established in the pitch and enjoyed possession, which led to several chances to go upfront. All Culio, Brandon and Colunga had the one nil in their boots within the first 30 minutes but none of them was actually materialized.

The game was becoming more and more balanced up until the 32nd minute, when visitor Miguel García was sent off, which translated into a new phase of control by the Majorcan outfit. More chances came in the way and out to waste as before. Half-time was reached.

The second half started rather similar, with a clear domination from the home side. The midfield area was Red property and the ball was most on the time in Reus’s territory, a Reus side who knew how to defend themselves and launch a counter-attack.

The balance in numbers came in the 52th minute when the referee, in a heavily protested decision, sent Moutinho off, leaving both teams down to ten men. That did not affect Majorcans’ play, who continued seeking Reus’ goal with some brilliant moment of team-play.

Nonetheless, as a bucket of cold water, when everyone were taking the draw for granted, a counter-attack in the 89th minute ended in Benito’s boots, who through a splendid hammering long-ranger, broke the deadlock and handed their first three points to Reus ever in the Spanish silver division.
