Pre-season match report: UD Poblense 0-1 RCD Mallorca
Martin Valjent’s goal is the difference as we begin our pre-season preparations with a victory
Martin Valjent scored the only goal of the game as we lifted the XLIX Trofeu de S'Agricultura with a 1-0 win over UD Poblense in our first game of pre-season.
Luis García Plaza travelled with a large squad for the friendly fixture and gave minutes to 24 players as numerous academy players were handed their senior debuts.
The side selected to play the first half were in control from the first whistle, but were unable to test the opposition goalkeeper throughout the opening exchanges.
A July heatwave meant hydration breaks were a regular feature and gave us time to regroup as the break approached. Academy winger Elías would have the first half’s best chance with five minutes left on the clock when he latched onto Aleksandar Sedlar’s cross, but failed to make meaningful contact and was denied with a good reflex save.
Pablo González would give us a late scare on the stroke of half time, but we headed into the break goalless.
We would have to wait until just after the hour-mark to have our next opportunity at goal, although Jaume Tovar was unable to convert Jordi Mboula’s deflected strike following the winger’s tricky break forward.
Brian Oliván and Iñigo Ruíz de Galarreta were next to try their luck as full-time loomed, but neither were able to break the deadlock as the game looked destined to remain goalless.
As time ebbed away, Martin Valjent managed to control and fire home Dani Rodríguez’s whipped cross to give us a late winner and ensure our pre-season preparations got off to a winning start.
