Cucho Hernández, Ante Budimir and Take Kubo were on target as we secured a vital point in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Real Betis at Estadio Benito Villamarín.
Looking to build on Matchday 24’s 1-0 win over Deportivo Alavés, Vicente Moreno made two changes to his side. Leonardo Koutris was handed his first start at left back in place of Lumor, while Take Kubo replaced Aleix Febas.
Cucho Hernandez’s spectacular volley brought a tight affair to life on the 16th minute as the striker displayed exquisite technique to hammer home Kubo’s deflected effort from the edge of the box into the far corner.
Despite having opened the scoring away from home for the first time this season, our lead would last just three minutes as Koutris tripped Nabil Fekir inside the box before Sergio Canales made no mistake from the spot.
The hosts then began to commit players forward in an attempt to get themselves in front, and although a solid defensive shape reduced William Carvalho and Loren to efforts outside the area, the latter’s drive did give Manolo Reina a brief scare as it rattled the far post.
Los Veridblancos’ offensive surges would prove to be their undoing on the 27th minute, as Cucho Hernández’s clever backheel gave Kubo time to find Ante Budimir with enough space to swivel past his marker and cap a wonderful team goal.
However, we would ultimately head into the break on level terms courtesy of a Nabil Fekir penalty after Fran Gamez had unintentionally handled the ball in the box.
Just two minutes into a second-half which showed no sign of slowing down from the previous 45 minutes, Joaquin put Real Betis in front for the first time when he added the finishing touch to a quick counter-attack.
The 52nd minute almost saw a third penalty of the evening awarded - this time in our favour - after Idrissu Baba appeared have been tripped in the box, although a lengthy VAR review showed Emerson had made contact with the ball prior to the midfielder.
Not letting our heads drop, we got our reward in the 70th minute when Take Kubo made space on the edge of the box with a clever feint before putting enough power on his strike to prevent Joel Robles’ outstretched palm from making significant contact.
The equaliser seemingly galvanised Moreno’s side, and although Dani Rodríguez forced Robles into a fine save and substitute Lago Junior was unlucky with a header, we were unable to find a winner yet gained a point which pulled us out of the relegation zone for the night.
