Steve Nash: ‘We’ve shown that anything is possible’

The part owner of the club spoke to Play Red about our upcoming clash with FC Barcelona and his experience in Mallorca

Steve Nash says Vicente Moreno’s side have shown they are capable of overcoming the odds ahead of the 11 fixtures which await us in our fight for survival.

Having overseen Los Bermellones achieve back-to-back promotions since he became part of the ownership group to purchase a stake in the club in 2016, the board member has been impressed with how we have adapted to our first season back in La Liga.

“We’re very fortunate to be where we are, so let’s not lose sight of this beautiful opportunity,” he told Play Red.  “Win or lose, I think the way Vicente [Moreno] and the players have come together, trained and performed as been near their maximum. I never watch our games and feel like we’re not putting in good effort. I never watch our games and feel like we’re disconnected or not on the same page.

“When I watch our team play, whether we play well or we play poorly, the spirit and togetherness is always there, so to be in that position, that type of spirit that manager has with his players so they can perform like that week in, week out, is a pleasure. We should enjoy it, wish them the best, be behind them, lift them up as much as we can and let’s see. Support is support. Anything is possible as we have seen in our recent history.”

Saturday evening’s clash with FC Barcelona marks our first game back in La Liga action after 102 days, and having been at the corresponding fixture earlier this season, Nash still can’t quite believe how far the team has come over the course of his tenure.

"It’s a dream to see a team which you’re now a part of, watch every kick of the ball and try to have an impact behind the scenes," he continued. "I don’t want to overstate that impact - it’s the people who are there every day doing the work that deserve the credit. To still be involved in our own way is an honour. To be able to play in places like the Camp Nou against Leo Messi and the rest of the team is obviously an experience which just doesn’t come along every day. It was just a surreal night and I thought the players just acquitted themselves very well."
