We were thrilled to organise a panel discussion with 'Cine & Deporte' film director Marcos Cabotá and Héctor Fernández alongside executive producer of 'Courtois, la vuelta del número 1'.
The trio explained how sports films are decided, produced and launched and were also joined alongside club legends Francisco 'Chichi' Soler and Jovan Stankovic.
The panel is part of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, of which the club is a partner.
Sandra Lipski, director of the festival, was in charge of moderating the session and also served to present the trailer for Orgull, the documentary film directed by Cabotá that narrates the 30 days leading up to the final of the Copa del Rey 2024.
“What matters is a story,” Cabotá commented on the aim of the documentary. “A sports documentary is not only for sports fans, the secret of a good documentary is that everyone can see it."
“The fundamental key of a filming team is that there is a link with the player to be able to generate that content that can later come out, or not,” said Fernandez, who explained how the script of Courtois' documentary changes after the serious knee injury.
“Impossible to put cameras in the locker room in my time, but because we had not been transmitted these ideas,” said Soler. “Now society has changed, the kids have changed. Now people want to see what is not seen. It has evolved for the better.
“We have to know our limits,” Cabotá added, because many times we can't record what we would like to. “The naturalness of the character is the success of the product”, added Fernández, ‘because forcing a person to play an actor makes the fan realize that it is fiction’.
“Now there are cameras everywhere,” said Soler, aware that the product and the show is getting bigger and bigger. To which Cabotá has assured that he recorded shots of the documentary film of the Cup “with an iPhone 15 with a special program”: “I am reviewing all the material of the Cup and I do not distinguish what is recorded with the 20,000€ camera and those that were made with the phone”.
“I don't know what I would give to have a film like the one you are making. I played three finals in Mallorca and we never had anything like this,” said Stankovic about the ‘Orgull’ trailer.
