Toni Amor: “Being back at RCD Mallorca is emotional for me”

Our new assistant manager spoke about his return to the club

Toni Amor can’t hide his delight about being back at RCD Mallorca as Javier Aguirre’s assistant manager.

Having previously coached in our youth system, Amor says he is right back at home and ready to help us in our fight for survival as our new manager's No.2.

"It is very special, I am very excited,” he told club media. “That's what it's all about: that the excitement and responsibility become work and good results. You try to go up the ladder, destiny gives you small opportunities that if you take advantage of, you have more options to get somewhere, the higher the better.

“For me, coaching at any other team in LaLiga is not the same as being here. For me there is an emotional point to this.

"The first time I went to Luis Sitjar, I was eight or nine-years-old. For a long time, I went every week to Sitjar - but not in LaLiga, but when I was in the Segunda División. I understand very well how the fans are because I was there. The fans want the team to give everything.

“If the team gives its all, the fans will give their all. You never know what is going to happen, but we are going to give everything. I'm going to give 200%, especially for the emotional aspect of being RCD Mallorca.”

Having coached numerous sides on the island during his first stint at the club, Amor then headed to Dubai where he began coaching across numerous sides throughout the Middle East and later Monterrey in Mexico.

"I took a gamble, we went to Dubai, and from there everything started,” he continued. ”I coincided with Diego Maradona and Hector Cúper and those were very good years. From there I was able to go to Hilal, which is one of the biggest clubs in Asia, and the results were very good. That was the definitive push to get me into the elite.

"When I went to to Al-Wahda, a team in Abu Dhabi, Javier Aguirre joined. We knew a person in common, Tomeu Llabrés, and he came with me to Abu Dhabi and then stayed with Javier. He was the person who introduced me to Aguirre.

"Javier is a person who gives you a lot of confidence and allows you to work with total peace of mind, but he is also very demanding. He is the one in charge of everything. My time with him has been a constant master's degree in teaching, especially in group management and in extreme situations.

"Mexico is also a very competitive league. We were able to win the Champions League. We beat the MLS champion, we beat Cruz Azul -  the Mexican champion the year before - and we won the final against Club America, the league leader at the time. I'm proud to be part of Monterrey's history.”

Aguirre’s first home fixture against Atletico Madrid this Saturday won’t be the first time Amor has coached at the Visit Mallorca Estadi, having replaced the suspended manager in the dugout during his spell at Leganes in a game which finished 1-1.

"It was a special match. It was exciting for me, coming back to my home and being there. When the ball started rolling you forget about everything and concentrate on the bench. I think we played a very good game that day, we competed very well. It was a pity that it wasn't enough to save both teams.”
