Pablo Maffeo’s goal takes us a step closer to safety
Pablo Maffeo’s first-half goal saw us take a giant leap towards mathematical safety as we beat Cádiz CF 1-0 at Estadio Mallorca Son Moix.
With a number of key defensive figures out due to injury, Javier Aguirre named a rotated back five which saw Iddrisu Baba sit in central defence.
Despite a flurry of chances for the visitors in the opening exchanges, we started the better side and got our reward early on as Maffeo reacted first to Baba’s header against the bar to put us in front in the 16th minute.
The frenetic start to the game bleated out after the goal as we headed into the dressing rooms with a slender lead to protect.
Half the ground thought Iza had equalized from a deadball situation 25-yards away from goal in the 52nd minute, although his free-kick curled the wrong side of the post.
There was to be late drama as Dani Rodríguez produced a heroic block on the line to prevent Cádiz equalizing with nine minutes left on the clock.
Vedat Muriqi had an opportunity with minutes to play to put the game to bed, although his header went wide of the front post.
We thought we had scored a second in injury time when Kang-In Lee rolled the ball into an empty net after the visitors desperately threw the entire side forward in search of an equaliser, although a VAR review adjudged the South Korean international has having been offside.
It would not matter however as just moments later the referee blew the final whistle to cue celebrations in the stands as we could potentially secure another season in LaLiga should other results go our way this weekend.
