Match Report: RCD Mallorca 3-2 Girona CF

Abdon Prats’ brace and Cyle Larin's goal make for a special night as we reached the Copa del Rey semi finals

We reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2009 as Abdon Prats’ brace and a goal from Cyle Larin in the first half saw us beat Girona CF 3-2.

Javier Aguirre continued to use Domink Grief in goal for the Copa del Rey as Abdón Prats led the line alongside Larin.

We almost got off to a dream start as Larin forced Juan Carlos into a fine save after our striker was slipped through at goal during the opening exchanges.

Our striker would make no mistake at the second time of asking as in the 21st minute he put the finishing touch to an incisive counter attack which saw Dani Rodríguez race down the flank and pull the ball back for Larin to fire home from close range.

Abdón Prats doubled our lead six minutes later when a loose ball teed itself up nicely for the centre forward to catch it on the half volley, unleash an unstoppable strike and find the far corner.

An emphatic 15 minutes of football saw Abdón get his second of the night in the 35th minute from the penalty spot after Larin’s attempt at goal was adjudged to have been handled by Antal.

The game’s frentic tempo slowed after the third goal as we headed into the break with a convincing 3-0 lead.

The visitors came out after the restart on the offensive as they looked to get back into the game, testing Grief on various occasions from distance as our goalkeeper made a number of good saves.

There was not much our shot stopper could do to deny Christian Stuani from the penalty spot as the opposition forward sent Grief the wrong way in the 68th minute after Antonio Raíllo received his marching orders for a foul in the box.

A man down, we had a job ahead of us to keep Girona’s flurry of attacks at bay, but we remained resilient until injury time as Savio found space in the box to poke home from close range.

The setback set up a tense finale, but the Estadio Mallorca Son Moix erupted at full time as we held on to ensure our passage to the semi finals with a 3-2 victory against the league leaders.
